This study aims to analyze the perception of Communication Science students of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences of Widya Mandira Catholic University (UNWIRA) who come from Belu Regency towards the use of the Tetun language in cultural diplomacy between Indonesia and Timor Leste in the border area. The Tetun language has an important role in the social life of border communities because it reflects the closeness of history, culture, and linguistics, and functions as a communication tool as well as a medium of non-formal cultural diplomacy. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques through focus group discussions, in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and documentation studies. The research informants are students of Communication Sciences FISIP UNWIRA from Belu Regency. Data analysis was carried out with an interactive model that included data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawn. The results of the study show that most students have a positive perception of the use of the Tetun language because it is considered effective in strengthening social relations, facilitating cross-cultural communication, and maintaining the cultural values of border communities. However, there is also a critical view that emphasizes the importance of balance with the use of Indonesian language to maintain national identity
